The Gift…

What Shall We Bring Him?

“Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh.”
Matthew 2:11b

It’s Epiphany and today we remember the Magi, the wise men from the East who came seeking “the King of the Jews.” They found Him in Bethlehem. When they found Him, they opened their treasures presenting Him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Christmas legend is full of stories of others who brought their gifts to the Christ child, most notably a drummer boy who “played his best for Him.” So it should be that we bring our offerings to Him who is King of the universe, Lord of the heavens and the earth, and Creator of all things and all people.

In another sense, what can we bring Him who has given us all things? Every gift that we might offer Him is already His. Like a child who picks his mother’s flowers and presents them to her as a “gift,” so are we who offer up to God what He has already given us.  For no one can out give God!

You see, He is the Gift. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son…” The Father offered up His Son as a Gift for the world in payment for all our sins. God freely gives us salvation in Him. Grace is God’s free gift of love in Jesus Christ.

Because He has loved us, and freely given us all things, we rejoice, and with the magi worship Him and pour out all our treasures before Him.

“Let all together praise our God
Before His glorious throne;
Today He opens heav’n again
To give us His own Son,
To give us His own Son.”

Hallelujah!
