“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
John 10:10b New International Version

The sign proclaims “pura vida” or loosely translated “the good life”.  It appears that is what most people around the world are searching for; the good life.  A life that is fulfilling, meaningful, happy, content.

But how many have found that “good life” in this past year?  Given the content on the news and social media, the good life remains elusive for many people.  Perhaps a more disciplined life style, a few more possessions, a few more caring friends might bring the good life.  Or perhaps a carefree vacation or the long sought for retirement or some spiritual meditation.

But all of this fails to bring about the permanent, deep good life.  These things are only temporary distractions from the obvious fact that life is not that good.  In fact, because of sin in this world, life often ranges from depressing to troubled to downright awful.  People regularly are hurt and hurt others.  We fail to love one another as we ought.  And people continue to struggle to find the good life.

But Jesus came into this world to bring true goodness, true life.  He offers Himself as a Sacrifice for our sin and redemption for our lostness.  He brings life that transcends death and forgiveness that cancels out sin.  And this life that he brings is not a temporary band aid on our wounds.  His life brings lasting peace and healing and contentment.  His life is eternal and transcends all circumstances, no matter how terrible they may be.

Have you been searching for the good life?  Has this past year disappointed you in the search for that good life?  Then look no further.  Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”  In Him we find goodness and eternal life.  Amen.
