“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.“
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 English Standard Version (ESV)
For over a hundred years, people have used telephones to talk to friends and family over distances. Today, many use mobile phones, but the phone itself is often the least-used feature, as people prefer sending text messages or checking social media. In Germany, it’s called a “handy.” I guess it is!
I use my “handy” mainly to send texts. They are usually answered promptly; plans are made or news is shared. I have a couple of friends, however, who are not as punctual about replying. I’ll send a text and I might get a reply a day later, if at all. Life goes on, but sometimes the silence can be bothersome or worrying.
What do I want?
Is the reply to a text an answer to a request, or a validation of my existence?
When I am talking to God, is an answer to my requests a sign that he knows I am here? That’s not the point. Talking with God in prayer is trusting that he is sovereign and trusting in faith that his will is ultimately accomplished.
“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”
Matthew 6:7-8 ESV
Be comforted in the assurance that your prayers are heard. The response may not be a direct answer., nor will it come with a loud fanfare. Sometimes the reply is “not yet.” His response may be a revelation of his plan – that still, small voice when we get a glimpse that the circumstances in our life are part of his perfect plan.
Be thankful in all things. God’s got this.
