“The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.  Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest.”
Matthew 9:37b-38 New International Version

The  sweet corn harvest was great this year and the three of us labored hard and long to pick and husk and blanche and cut and bag the harvest.  The work had to be done when the harvest was ready and had to be done right.  It took all of us to get it done!

Jesus says in today’s verses that there is a different type of harvest that is ready and needs many workers to harvest.  That harvest is not a harvest of grain or fruit or vegetables, but a harvest of souls.  There are many, many people who need the Good News of Jesus and are waiting to be gathered into the kingdom.  They are living in a place of despair and sin and darkness and they need the saving grace of our Lord Jesus to be saved.  Often all that they need to believe and be saved is for a believer to come along side them and share the Good News that Jesus has died for them to take away their sins and that in Him they may have eternal life.

But there is a problem with the harvest.  The problem is that there are not enough workers to bring in the harvest.  There are not enough followers of Jesus who are willing to share the Good News with other people and to lead them into relationship with God.  Without these workers many will perish without faith in Jesus Christ.

Is Jesus calling you to labor in the harvest?  Is He calling you to become a witness of His love and mercy to others?  If Jesus is calling you today, please answer as Isaiah did in Isaiah 6, “Here am I , send me!”  For the harvest is great, but the workers are few.  Please respond positively to Jesus’ call to you.  Amen.
