“When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.”
Joshua 2: 11 New International Version

Joshua sent two spies to check out Jericho. They stayed at Rahab’s house while they were there. The king of Jericho found out that the spies were staying with Rahab and demanded that she bring them to him. But Rahab protected the spies, hiding them on her roof among flax stalks. She misdirected the men who were pursuing the spies and they left to search elsewhere.

Then she told the spies that the entire country was afraid of them because of their Lord. They knew of the parting of the Red Sea and the destruction of the two Amorite kings.

When the spies returned to Joshua, they said, “The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands; all the people are melting in fear because of us.” Joshua 2:24 New International Version

The heat is on. The consequences of sin are evident throughout the world. All through life we bear the heartache of evil around us. Even if our hearts feel like melting under the pressures of discouragement or disappointment, God is still the one to be feared. His mighty power is infinite. He can and will destroy everything evil, whether He chooses to do so now or once He returns. He is the same powerful God of Israel and the same powerful God of this very moment in history. Satan and all evildoers will melt in fear when Christ returns.

But as children of the Almighty King, we can bask in the cool breezes of God’s love and protection where our hearts can find courage and our fears melt away. See the power of God at work in the book of Joshua. Then trust that He is that same powerful Lord every single day.
