Thirsting for God

“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.”
Psalm 42:1 New International Version

I have often worked hard in my life and sweated profusely.  But I didn’t really know what real thirst was until I got heat exhaustion working in Guatemala.  No matter how much water I took in, I was still thirsty, thirsty with an unquenchable thirst.

Jesus met a woman in Samaria by the town well.  When she came to draw water, he offered her living water.  When she mistakenly thought he meant literal running water, He corrected her, “Everyone who drinks this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:13-14 (NIV)

The water Jesus gives is not a temporary thirst quencher.  This living water is a water that gives life for eternity.  In fact, Jesus is the living water, a well of life springing up in every person who believes in Him.

Where is your deepest thirst, your deepest need?  Is it for love, intimacy, acceptance, peace, security, forgiveness, family?  In Jesus Christ, our deepest thirsts are quenched.  In Him we find the answer to all our questions and the end to all our searching.  In Him we discover peace that passes understanding, joy that has no end, love that goes on forever.

In the cross of Jesus we see the eternal God pouring out His blood for a world of sinners and offering the Way to the Father.  In the manger of Bethlehem we see the Hope of the world, Light in the darkness, and the end to all tears.

Lord, thank you for the Water of Life.  Thank you for the Peace I have in Jesus.  Thank you that you have quenched my thirsty soul and that in You there is Life forever.  Amen.
