Light Unto My Path

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 119:105 ESV

I look forward to Wednesdays. It wasn’t always that way. In a previous chapter of my life story, Wednesdays just felt like a long, boring bridge to the other side of the week. I look back and I’m a little bummed I let life pass by that way. Have you recognized a similar chapter in your life? Hold that thought. We’ll meet back here in a moment.

Now, my Wednesday mornings make me smile and fill my heart with (an almost overwhelming amount of) joy. I sit in a pew, surrounded by first graders. The rest of the chapel is filled with other children, ages 3-12. Soon, their voices unite in the sweetest and purest anthem. The verses sometimes run together like a long mumble; but you know when we’ve hit the chorus. “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path,” rings through the rafters. Glorious.

OK. Let’s go back to our life story–the one God is directing. I can clearly see what’s missing in the chapters when I was simply floating along. Sometimes I was working to get to the weekend or to the next big thing. Other times I let work, money or success rule my heart. Other things became idols and my relationship with the Lord slipped. But praise God that He is a Father who pursues His children. He’s a shepherd who leaves the 99 in pursuit of the one. When we look over our timeline, do we see Him actively moving? Do we recognize His faithfulness despite our failures?

I’m learning how vitally important it is to spend uninterrupted, intentional time with Him daily. That time sets the tone for the day and allows us to be fixed on things above. He is our guide and His word provides the light we need to see through the darkness. We will endure trials, experience moments of weakness and fall short. But we are never alone, and we always have a lamp lighting our path.
