“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.”
Romans 1:20. New International Version

In these words, Paul is describing what we call ‘the natural knowledge of God.’ The whole created order, in all its wonders, is evidence of God, of the divine nature and eternal power. If one cannot see that, says Paul, one is without excuse. The downward spiritual spiral following the Genesis 3 Fall into sin led to the inability to recognize God’s presence in creation. We had eyes, but we could not see. In the Gospels, Jesus often teaches a lesson and finishes with the words, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”  In other words, ‘Listen Up’!  Today is about seeing. In this context, I can hear Jesus saying, “Whoever has eyes to see, look around!”‘

Praise God for his ‘revealed knowledge’ in Christ Jesus and the Scriptures which bear testimony to him! We now, children of faith that we are, have eyes that see. Because God reveals himself in Christ and the Scriptures, we know him. We see him. Our eyes are opened.

We even see reminders of the Triune nature of the Lord. Looking westward as the sun rises, there are three pink-tinged clouds, different from the other clouds. One’s eye is drawn to them. One’s heart is filled with wonder. One’s faith sees nature witnessing to the presence of the Lord, to the power of his creative Word and vision, and even to his triune nature.

Today, open your eyes. ‘If you have eyes, look around!’ Drink in the wonder of the Lord in the beauty, intimacy and magnitude of creation. Where will you see evidence of the Lord?  Where will your faith-eyes find creation’s witness, and creation’s reflected glory of the eternally glorious God who has called us out of darkness into his marvelous light?

Happy seeing!
