“I love the Lord because he hears my voice
and my prayer for mercy.
Because he bends down to listen,
I will pray as long as I have breath!”
Psalm 116:1-2 New Living Translation
When climbing a mountain, you can’t help but hike over many rocks. If a lot of them are stacked on each other it’s hard to maintain traction, making it harder to gain ground up the mountain ahead and creating a real danger of slipping down the slope. Finding a large solid rock becomes vital to hold onto while you regain your footing.
This is what happens when we stray from listening to God’s voice.
Even as people of faith, we are so bombarded with voices that distract us from His. Voices of judgement, voices encouraging selfishness, voices demanding conformity to the world’s view of life. If we let those messages infiltrate our hearts and minds, we are in danger of sliding down a slippery slope away from faith in Christ, our solid rock.
We will always confront dangerous, distracting voices for our entire lives on this earth. When we listen to our Heavenly Father, we will hear the voice of our only solid and reliable rock above all other noise. Even over the voice of the devil, who constantly tries to drag us away from the loving words of our Lord and Savior.
Dear Lord, “Turn your ear to listen to me; rescue me quickly. Be my rock of protection, a fortress where I will be safe.”
