When Your World Turns Upside Down

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth gives way…”
Psalm 46:1-2a

Mud slides are common in areas of the Northwest and a friend of mine took this picture, of an overturned excavator caught in one, near the Columbia River.  Although the driver escaped serious injury, this accident would be remembered by him as a very bad day.

What can we do when our world suddenly turns upside down and we lose our balance?  What can we do when all of our seemingly secure foundation, everything we depended upon, is suddenly taken away?  What can we do when illness, death, loss, catastrophe, violence, or other unforeseen circumstances remove our carefully planned security?

The answer is to turn to God.  To turn to His Word, His mercy, His promises, His grace. To join hands with other believers, and to again commit ourselves to the only One who is not moved…the One who will never desert us.  “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” When even the mountains quake, and the earth gives way, we will not be afraid,  because the Lord is our security, our refuge, and our fortress.

Yes, we are going to have some really bad days in our life, and some very tough nights.  However, we will not be alone, and the Lord has promised to provide for us here on earth and for eternity.  He who did not withhold even His own Son, but gave Him up for us all, will graciously provide for us even when “every earthly prop gives way”.

“On Christ, the solid Rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand.”  He is our Refuge and so we will not be shaken.  Even on very bad days.
