“What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?”
Psalm 8:4 New International Version
Recently our church had a great Vacation Bible School and the theme centered around the universe and all the heavenly bodies; the moon, the stars, the sun, the planets, comets. The children loved the emphasis on space travel and adventures of astronauts.
I, too, am fascinated by mankind’s attempts to travel and see far into space. I remember watching as Neil Armstrong made man’s first steps on the moon. And I am especially awed as I look up into the heavens at night and see the immensity, variety and incredible majesty of the heavens.
I, with the Psalmist David, ask the question, “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” Why do you care about us? Why do you care about me? I am not only an insignificant speck in your universe, Lord, I am a sinful, rebellious speck in your universe! Why do you care about me?
And yet the Scriptures are so very clear, “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.” That is amazing love and amazing grace. In the middle of a universe to govern, the Lord of creation cares about me, takes time to love me, sent His own Son to die for me.
The universe with its vast array is amazing and awe inspiring. But far more wonderful and mysterious is the love that the Father has shown you and me, that He has a plan to save you and use you for His glory and His plan. What a powerful and kind and merciful God we have! What love He has for you and me! In the name of Jesus, Amen.
