After the Funeral

Enduring the journey of grief.

You can listen to today’s devotion by clicking on this SoundCloud link.

“Dear woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asked [Mary]. “Who are you looking for?” She thought he was the gardener. “Sir,” she said, “if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and get him.” “Mary!” Jesus said. She turned to him and cried out, “Rabboni!” (which is Hebrew for “Teacher”).
John 20:15 New Living Translation

You may know that my father-in-law died recently.

He lived 98 years.

He put up with me trying to help him farm. He laughed when I hit my thumb with a hammer multiple times and forgave me when I left the gate open to the milk parlor and the cows messed up the holding pen. I knew I had made it when he was comfortable enough to fall asleep on the piano bench as I talked with him.

after the funeralI took this picture of my son, Michael, after the funeral.

There is an interesting relationship between the sun and my son.  Though the sun was setting, it still stands above Michael. As I look at this picture, my eyes drift between Michael and the sun. They move down and up and down again. This is the movement between hope and pain and hope again.

Those of you making this journey through grief know that pain and hope are real. There are days of pain and days of hope, more days of pain and more days of hope.

Will the intensity of this journey lose its grip? Yes.

When someone dies they remain a part of us, but with hard work and given time the pain of death loses intensity. While we make this journey into and through grief we hear the voice of Jesus singing out to us as it did to Mary. He simply calls out her name in midst of her tears and Mary responds by clinging to him, her “Rabboni.”

As we grieve, Jesus calls out our name and invites us to cling to him. Mary had to let go because Jesus needed to ascend to his Father, but you and I can cling to Jesus for eternity. Through all the pain and hope, the resurrected and victorious Jesus can be trusted to see us through our grief.

The death of grief is near. The day of Jesus’ return is closer now than ever. The day is coming when God will wipe away all tears.

Harvest Time

Send Out the Workers!

You can listen to today’s devotion by clicking on this SoundCloud link.

“The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.
Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore,
to send out workers into his harvest field.” Matthew 9:37-38

The field of wheat stretches across the landscape.  The heads are full, the grain is ripe and heavy, the harvest bountiful.  If only workers would come to gather the grain!

IMG_1490The problem with this harvest is not that there is no grain to gather.  The problem with this harvest is that there are so few workers to gather the grain.

Our Lord Jesus does not tell His disciples to pray for a harvest of souls.  He does not tell them to pray that the Holy Spirit would work repentance and faith upon unbelievers’ hearts. He does not tell them to pray that many would seek salvation in His name.   No, there are many who are ready to be gathered into His kingdom.  There are many who are “ripe” for the gathering into His kingdom. Many hearts, many souls are ready to be gathered in.

What our Lord Jesus asks you and I to pray for are laborers for the harvest, for many who would hear the call to go into the harvest of souls to gather them to the Lord.  He calls you to pray for workers in the harvest.

Is He calling you?  Does He call you into the harvest?  Is Jesus calling you to be His workers in the harvest of souls?  For the harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few….

How shall you answer?  Shall you answer His call, “Here am I, send me?” For the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.  Pray for workers in the harvest…

Lord Jesus, I pray that you would send many laborers, many workers into the harvest of souls.  May many hear your call to go and gather in those waiting to come into Your kingdom.  And if you are calling me this day, send your Holy Spirit to give me courage to say, “Here am I, send me.”  Amen.

It’s All about Partnership

God does amazing things when Christians work together.

You can listen to today’s devotion by clicking on this SoundCloud link.

This picture is a lesson in partnership.

The people of Acaguaque, Honduras built this kitchen next to their church. The did everything themselves. It’s my understanding that they not only nailed these timbers in place, they cut them as well. When I took this picture, everything looked good except for one thing. The kitchen needed a metal roof.

This kitchen has since been completed and is now used to feed the children of Acaguaque.
This kitchen has since been completed and is now used to feed the children of Acaguaque.

The people of Acaquaque spent a great deal of blood and sweat but very little money. The roof would cost more than they could afford at that time…and the rainy season was just around the corner.

Kitchens like these, built with the support of people in the neighboring village of Lepaterique, play a critical role in feeding the children of communities like Acaquaque. Without a roof, this kitchen would sit unused, meaning that the children might go hungry.

When I returned to Colorado Springs I shared the need with a couple of people. We raised the money that week and the kitchen now has a roof.

All it cost was $400; such a meager amount for us, but gold to the people of Acaguague.

“Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God.
Whenever I pray, I make my requests for all of you with joy
,
for you have been my partners in spreading the Good News
about Christ from the time you first heard it until now.”

Philippians 1:3-5 New Living Translation
