Feeling as Useless as a Chairlift in the Summer

Our value is found in God’s gracious call upon our lives.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
Jeremiah 1:5 English Standard Version
Beaver Creek, Colorado
Beaver Creek, Colorado

There is nothing more pathetic looking than a chairlift in the summer, especially when you view them up close and personal.

Thousands of people use this chairlift at Beaver Creek every winter. There are lines so long that you hope to at least get one ski run in before the lift closes. You’re made to ride the lift with others even if you don’t know them. No solo riders on this lift.

How different it looks in the summer. Granted there was one lift open at Beaver Creek ferrying people to the disc golf course, restaurant and miles of biking/hiking trails, but this lift was forgotten. It was useless.

Maybe that’s the way Jeremiah felt when God called him to be a prophet to the nation of Judah. Assyria had already conquered the northern kingdom of Israel, and Babylon would soon be tormenting Judah. He prophesied during Josiah’s reforms only to watch those reforms disappear…and nobody listened to him. How useless it must feel to speak God’s word when nobody is listening.

Yet, God announced Jeremiah’s value when he called him to be his spokesman. God had formed him in his mother’s womb. God had set him apart for his purpose even before he sucked in his first breath of air. God appointed him not only as a prophet to Judah but to the nations as well.

And Jeremiah’s prophecy is still changing lives.

God formed you in your mother’s womb. God set you apart for holy purposes even before your eyes were opened. God appointed you to do his work. And he has done so through the grace of his Son, Jesus Christ. Your value is found in God’s redemptive call.

You are not useless even though you might feel like a chairlift in the summertime.

Enjoying Life When We Feel Like Decaying Wood

God works his best when he renews that which is falling apart.

You can listen to today’s devotion by clicking on this SoundCloud link.

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
Revelation 21:3-5 English Standard Version
Shrine Pass, Colorado
Shrine Pass, Colorado

There is a story behind this structure that stood some five miles outside of Red Cliff, Colorado on the road to Shrine Pass, but does anyone know what that story was? There is a good chance that this story has disappeared along with the slowly decaying hut. Was it a home or weekend get away? Who lived here and what was their story? Obviously there are more questions than answers to the tale of this building.

However, there is no question about what has happened to this structure. The snow, rain, sun and wind have been doing their job in slowly, but systematically, eradicating this structure. As the structure continues its journey to dust, the plants are thriving. Something new is replacing the old.

The apostle John heard God declare from his throne, “Behold, I am making all things new.” It’s interesting that John hears God’s voice after he heard another voice which promised the day of final victory when every tear is wiped away and death is no more. With the vision of God’s promise, he is assured that even now God is making all things new. We’re not merely waiting until Christ returns to experience life.

Often it appears that our lives are decaying like this building, yet in the midst of that decay God is making everything new. He is molding and shaping us this side of eternity in preparation for the amazing gift he has already guaranteed us in Christ.

The hope we have in Christ is rooted in two promises: The promise that one day God will destroy the enemy of death, and the promise that today God is renewing our lives. And we know that God keeps his promises.

An Adult Lesson from a Child’s Tenacity

We can learn a lesson about persistence in prayer from a child’s tenacity.

You can listen to today’s devotion by clicking on this SoundCloud link.

And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you;
seek, and you will find;
knock, and it will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds,
and to the one who knocks it will be opened.”

Luke 11:9-10 English Standard Version
Portland, Oregon
Portland, Oregon

When children learn what’s behind the glass of these containers they’re relentless in bugging mom and dad for a coin to buy that special treat. I remember bugging my mom for a penny (maybe it was a nickel) so that I could buy gum. You might remember being relentless in childhood as well.

Children are tenacious, and we adults could learn from them especially when it involves prayer.

Knowing what’s behind the glass of God’s love is what causes us to be persistent in prayer. What’s behind the glass is the Holy Spirit (Luke 11:13). It’s not a new car, home or boat. What we need more than anything else is the Holy Spirit.

It is this Spirit who brings us to faith in Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 12:3).

It is this Spirit who works his fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control in our lives (Galatians 5:22).

Through the work of the Holy Spirit the early church turned the world upside down. What might happen if Christians today persistently asked God to pour out his Spirit on us?
