One Way

How Can We Know the Way?

You can listen to today’s devotion by clicking on this SoundCloud link.

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way? Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.”
John 14:5-6

I took this picture of the interstate highway exchange in Portland while traveling in the giant tram that runs above the city up to Oregon Health Sciences University.  I was stunned by the complex and confusing array of roads just running in and out of this one interchange of freeways.  And how difficult it can be to choose just the right road at just the right moment or risk ending up in a very different place than you might want to be.

Sounds like life, doesn’t it?  Every day you and I are faced with complex and confusing arrays of decisions that determine all sorts of major and minor destinies of ours.  Every decision has potential good or bad outcomes, every turning point can determine all sorts of consequences for you.  Life can feel daunting, threatening, fearful, even overwhelming at times.

Perhaps that is what you are facing today, all sorts of decisions that could determine your short and long term future.  How will you choose?  How will you know what is best for you?  What is the right choice to make at the right time?

Into the midst of our anxious lives, Thomas’ words have special meaning, “… how can we know the way?”  What way is the right way?  How can we know where we ought to go, where we ought to turn?

Jesus answers, “I am the way…”  Jesus’ words stop us short. Jesus is the way?  Surely he means that “he knows the way”, or “he can help us know the way”.  No, you heard it right the first time, “Jesus is the way.”

There may be many ways that seem right, many ways that seem welcoming, but there is only one way, only one way to the Father, only one way to truth, only one way to life, the way of Jesus.  We follow Him, His cross, His life, His grace.  There may be many ways that seem right to a man, but there is only one way that leads to life.  That is Jesus.

Once you are following Jesus, the other minor decisions have a way of sorting themselves out.  Once you know where you are going for eternity, everything else falls into perspective.  And you don’t have to live in anxiety and fear and confusion.

How can we know the way?  The answer is both simple and profound.  The answer… Jesus is the way.

Lord Jesus, you are the way, the truth, and the life.  I confess that I am easily confused and anxious about even the simplest decisions.  But I choose you again today.  I choose to continue to follow you.  You are the way.  Amen.

What to Do When You’re Exhausted

Our rest is found in Jesus.

You can listen to today’s devotion by clicking on this SoundCloud link.

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
Matthew 11:28 New Living Translation

This picture, of what I believe to be some variety of an African Swallowtail butterfly, was taken at the Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster, Colorado. This was my first trip to the pavilion and I wasn’t disappointed. Butterflies are constantly swirling past you, sometimes looking like their gunning for your nose and sometimes landing in your hair.

The variety of butterflies is astounding. Some are large others small. Some are blue and others black. Some fly in pairs and others by themselves. This great variety of butterflies is always in motion.

However, this butterfly needed a break from all that activity.

We see in humanity what is reflected by these butterflies. Humans come in all sizes, colors and personalities. Yet, even with this variety we all flit about here and there looking like we don’t know what we’re doing. And sometimes that’s an apt description of our lives. We don’t know what we’re doing.

We also need a break.

Jesus offers us his rest everyday. He has placed his yoke of mercy and grace on our shoulders. We are his. We rest in him. We are restored.

It wasn’t long and this butterfly flew off to join the mass of butterflies painting the sky. It isn’t long after we rest in Christ that we once again join the rest of God’s redeemed painting the world with his grace.

Vines and Branches

Jesus will never leave me.

You can listen to today’s devotion by clicking on this SoundCloud link.

“I am the vine, you are the branches.
If a man remains in me and I in him,
he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

John 15:5

The Sunday after my dad died, my cousin greeted me with a hug and said, “Now both you and Margaret are truly orphans.” What did she mean?  That both my wife and I have now lost both our parents, we are bereft of parents here on this earth.

It was a sobering thought.  I could never again call up my mom and chat, never again go to my dad for advice.  There would be no more retelling of the old family stories, no more of the familiar greetings.  I was an orphan.

Jesus is different.  Jesus will not leave me as an orphan.  He is not leaving me.  If I abide in Him, He will not leave me.  In fact He will nurture me and grow in me the fruit of His love and mercy.

My parents gave me my earthly life.  And now they are gone.  But Jesus gives me eternal, abundant life and that life is available to me every day, all day, forever.  He knows my need to be connected, to have Someone who is always there, who does not leave.

IMG_1040 (1)The vineyard in this picture is just outside my front door in Oregon.  We have used that vineyard as a backdrop to take family pictures of our whole extended family.  One of those pictures is above my desk as I write this devotion.  But now faces in those pictures are gone and I will not see them again until I too, enter the presence of our Lord.

Jesus is the True Vine and I am a branch grafted into Him through Baptism and faith.  Although I experience grief and loss and bereavement here on this earth, although those I love best may leave me, Jesus will not leave.  He has a hold on me, and He will not let me go.  He will not leave me as an orphan.

“I am Jesus’ little lamb, Ever glad at heart I am;
For my Shepherd gently guides me, Knows my need and well provides me,
Loves me every day the same, Even calls me by my name.”

Lord Jesus, thank you that you never leave me alone.  Comfort me when I feel like an orphan.  Thank you for never letting me go.  Love me with your life giving love today and every day. Amen.
