Two Roads-Passion Week

The road to desolation and death.

You can listen to today’s devotion by clicking on this SoundCloud link.

“They went to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and Jesus said, “Sit here while I go and pray.” He took Peter, James, and John with him, and he became deeply troubled and distressed. He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

He went on a little farther and fell to the ground. He prayed that, if it were possible, the awful hour awaiting him might pass him by.  “Abba, Father,” he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”
Mark 14:32-36 New Living Translation

So it begins—Passion Week. This week we follow Jesus on the road to His ultimate death, but He isn’t quite finished with His work.  On Monday, He forcefully clears out the temple in Jerusalem of the sellers, who cheated the people, challenging the chief priests when His authority to do so was questioned. He curses a fig tree because it bore no fruit, highlighting the fate of the leaders in the temple. He tells His disciples again of his imminent death and resurrection. He returns to Bethany for the Passover and is anointed with expensive oil of nard, by Mary, before His betrayal. A lot happens on the desolate and dusty road He chose to travel.

Yet He could have chosen another road. We know He desired to, as the man Jesus. Later in the week, in the garden of Gethsemane, He asked His Father to take it all from Him. He knew all things were possible with God, yet Jesus surrendered to His will. It was His Father’s will to pay the price of our sin with His Son. Jesus could have walked away, but He chose to redeem us with His life.

So we walk down the road through Scripture with Jesus this week. It’s the hardest road we will ever walk, seeing what suffering our sin brought about, but the journey’s end will be the most glorious destination possible—eternity with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We don’t like to spend much time thinking about His excruciating death. We’d rather rapidly accelerate to the celebration of Easter. Until we get to His resurrection, though, spend some time in the grave with Jesus and experience His death for your sin.

Two Roads-Palm Sunday

The road to triumph and treachery.

You can listen to today’s devotion by clicking on this SoundCloud link.

“As he rode along, the crowds spread out their garments on the road ahead of him. When he reached the place where the road started down the Mount of Olives, all of his followers began to shout and sing as they walked along, praising God for all the wonderful miracles they had seen.

“Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the Lord!
Peace in heaven, and glory in highest heaven!”

But some of the Pharisees among the crowd said, “Teacher, rebuke your followers for saying things like that!”

He replied, “If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!”
Luke 19:36-40 New Living Translation

As Jesus rode the donkey, there were many people lining the dusty road who praised Him as their King. They may not have fully understood what that meant, since they were looking for a new earthly kingdom, but they knew that He had healed them, accepted them, and forgave them. Jesus knew this moment was brief, for He knew of the fate that awaited Him and of the plot that was unfolding at that moment—the plot to execute Him.

It would be hard for me to travel down that road and not think of my fate. I would be grateful for the outpouring of love and support. I would want to enjoy the cheers of my followers, those who believed in and supported me. But it would be difficult to do that knowing that very soon I would be led down another road where I didn’t wish to go—the most difficult road that ends my life.

Honor Jesus as your King this day. Tomorrow the cheers and praises for Jesus will all be gone, and the road to His suffering and death begins.

God’s Green Earth

A Stewardship Story.

You can listen to today’s devotion by clicking on this SoundCloud link.

The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it….
Psalm 24:1 New International Version

The earth belongs to the Lord, as well as all that is in it.  There is a quite consistent, insistent emphasis on ownership in the Scripture.  The earth does not belong to itself.  In fact, we do not belong to ourselves.  The earth, and we, belong to God.

‘The earth is the Lord’s….”  It is not ours.  This changes how we view our relationship to the earth.  This orients our minds to pursue God’s will, even with respect to the earth.  We live on the earth by God’s good grace.  Our use of the earth reflects our love for God and our desire to honor him day by day.  It is a reflection of a ‘whole spirituality.’

Humankind, from the beginning, was to have the role of caretaker over the earth.  This kind of stewardship is an important element of the core values of Christianity.  God invited humankind to fill the earth; to subdue it; to have dominion over all the creatures of the earth.

Having dominion doesn’t mean abusing.  We exercise stewardship of the earth in a way that blesses God, and honors him and the work of his creation.  We are people of both earth and heaven.  We honor God in the way that we treat his creation.

Here are a few ways we could implement God’s original intention for us with respect to our relationship to the earth:

  • Compost yard waste
  • Worm compost vegetable produce
  • Make and/or hang up a bird house
  • Use a hummingbird feeder and other ‘regular’ bird feeder
  • Use native plants in our landscaping
  • Reusable grocery bags
  • Walk or ride a bike to work/school and on errands if possible
  • Plant shrubs in the yard that provide protection for birds
  • Drink water rather than soda (which has the added benefit of good stewardship of our bodies!)
  • ?? Your ideas?

Creator Father, work in me the heart and hands of a good steward of your earth. Amen.
