Restore Us

Regeneration

“Restore us, O God; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.”
Psalm 80:3, New International Version

This picture is over 10 years old.  It is a picture of some of the area close to Mount Saint Helens.  The devastation caused by the mountain’s eruption, in 1980, is still very visible today, 37 years later.  The pyro-clastic blast jettisoned huge pieces of the mountain into the air, flying miles, to land like so many massive pimples on the valley floor today.  The mountainsides were scoured clean of flora, and a deep ash covered what had been lush forests full of wildlife.

Mount Saint Helens National Monument, Washington

Even so, the land began to heal.  Vegetation was restored.  Biologists and botanists suggest that many of the seeds were in underground ‘storehouses’—tunnels made by ground squirrels, mice, and other burrowers.  Douglas fir seedlings like heat to germinate, I’m told.

I have felt like scorched earth a time or two.  Maybe more.  I have felt lifeless.  I struggle still with old, settled habits and thought patterns, etched deep into me from years of depression.  However, our God is a God of restoration; a God of new life; a God of a New Creation.

How important it is for us to believe the Lord; to trust the Lord to restore us, his face shining upon us—divine light blessing us.  That is part of the Aaronic blessing, after all: “May the Lord make his face shine upon you.  And give you peace.”

Shine, Light of the World.  Shine upon us and illuminate our souls with the healing light of your presence today.  Shine upon us and restore hope, joy, peace, and purpose to our living as your children in the world.  Restore us indeed, O God, not to what we were…but to what you have made us to be in Christ Jesus—children of a father’s heart, a Father-God’s heart at that.

Know the Lord’s light, children of God.  Know the Lord’s restorative elixir in the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.  How much he loves you!

Mesmerized by the Light

The light of Christ sets us free to experience life.

The contrast between light and darkness, between day and night, are intricately related to each other. The light and the darkness are both present for this young girl. Each creates a different point of view. The light and the darkness shape her perspective of life.

Tegucigalpa, Honduras

She appears to be mesmerized by the light, fixated on something that has been illuminated by it. There have been many times that I’ve been mesmerized by light. For example, I love staring into camp fire. The light moves with every flame, dancing and dispelling the darkness. A few years back, I spent an evening in front of a fire, burning in my fireplace, taking pictures of the flames. Not one picture looked like another.

However, there is nothing mesmerizing about the darkness, unless a person equates fear with being enthralled with the darkness. I don’t like it. It is difficult to find your way in the dark. I visited the Mark Twain Cave near Hannibal, Missouri many years ago. At one point our tour guide turned out the lights. We were enveloped in absolute darkness. Our eyes never adjusted. There was no freedom.

“The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.”
John 1:4-5 New Living Translation

Many people claim that there is no freedom in being a Christian; they claim that laws, rules and regulations restrict our freedom. The opposite is true. Since Jesus is the light that shines in the darkness of this fallen world, we experience freedom in Christ to see the world in a new way. We’re set free to see God’s mark on creation and his breath of life sustaining us. We are no longer trapped in our darkness, but set free to be mesmerized by His light.
