Scars

by Kala Loptien

Proof of Healing

But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
Isaiah 53:5, English Standard Version

Scars seem to be a part of life. I remember falling on the blacktop in elementary school and skinning my knee. I had quite the scar to show for it. I’m reminded of my son’s birth — the physical and emotional stress — when I see the large scar on my abdomen. My little girl has a scar on her brow bone. The mark of a life before God placed her in our home. Scars can appear in nature too, much like this tree. I’m guessing we all have experiences and stories tied to scarring.

Our Savior had wounds and scars — the most intense, excruciating, sacrificial and unfathomable kind. On that cross, He suffered a brutal death and agonizing separation from the Father so we would have victory and eternity in/with Him. We read that Jesus [intentionally] maintained the wounds when He appeared to the disciples. Though He didn’t have anything to prove, He did it for their/our sake. Any remaining doubt that He was the Messiah was demolished. These wounds were proof that Jesus was pierced and crushed in our place, then rose triumphantly so that by them we would find healing.

Scars are often what remains after trauma. They can tell a story of transformation. They are the physical proof of what we’ve experienced. While the visual remnant may remain, the death and resurrection of our Savior is proof of our spiritual and emotional healing. We are redeemed and given new life, with a compelling story and testimony to share with others.

Strength and Mercy

By Pastor Steve Nickodemus

The Gentle Giant

“The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.”
Psalm 145:8 English Standard Version

I learned early in my life that God was all powerful and all mighty and omnipotent and omnipresent.  He is the Lord of the universe and by his hand all creation was made and sustained.  He speaks and the earth quakes, he utters a word and the oceans roar.  He is holy and above all things and his judgments are beyond finding out.  God is no one to be trifled with!

But only later did I grow to understand that this almighty Maker of the world, the Creator of all things, is also full of mercy.  He has the strength and prerogative to crush me, a sinner, under his feet.  But instead he showed his grace and love to me in Jesus, his Son.  God did not send his Son to punish me as I deserve.  But instead the Lord showed his mercy by sending his only begotten Son to die on a cross, to pay the price for my sins, to open a way for weak sinners to be restored to him.

I think that as a boy I was afraid of my Dad.  He was quiet and powerful and I wasn’t sure that he was pleased with me.  But only later did I come to realize how much my Dad loved me and was proud of me.  I had only seen him for his strength and power, later I came to know him for his mercy and love.

What a wonderful revelation this is, to know not only the God of power and might and judgment, but also to experience the God of gentleness and grace and love!  For our God has made himself known in our beloved Savior and Friend, Jesus.  He has loved me and continues to love me and pours out his forgiveness upon me.  How great is our God!  How full of power and might and mercy and love!  Amen!

Eyes Fixed

By Pastor Don Schatz

Paying Attention

“And he [Jesus] rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down.  They eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.”
Luke 4:20
 New Revised Standard Version

What captures your attention?  Who can capture your attention?  Have you ever listened, spellbound, to someone speaking?  Has a sermon or homily ever enthralled you in this way?  Jesus had read the Scripture.  Otherwise, he hadn’t spoken yet.  Reading Scripture is common enough.  Or is it?  I have heard people read the Scripture in such a way that as they did, the Word came alive.  Jesus read.  Then he sat.  “The eyes of all were fixed on him.”

Those ancient eyes are a life lesson for us.  Fix your eyes upon Jesus.  Listen to him.  Follow him.  Heed his Word in the Scriptures and they will guide you.  They will teach you.  They will inform you.  They will reveal the love of God Almighty for you.  Jesus is the evidence of the light of God’s love for you.  Jesus is that Light and Word and Love.  For you.

When others speak harmful words, fix your eyes on Jesus.  When others seek to influence you to walk a wrong path, fix your eyes on Jesus.  When your own inner voice challenges your sense of self-worth and importance, fix our eyes on Jesus.  When others try to change you into their image, fix your eyes on Jesus.  Only Jesus. Don’t Wait

Guess what?  Where your eyes are fixed, your ears follow.  Fix your eyes on Jesus.  Your ears will hear the Word of the Lord.  Enjoy the fellowship of others whose eyes and ears are fixed on Jesus.  Who will look to Jesus, hear his Word, because they see that your eyes are fixed on Jesus?  Jesus, Light of the World, shines on you.  By his Light you see, you know, you are warmed to the core of your soul with divinity’s eternal love.  For you.  Fix your eyes on Jesus.  Today.
