Guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are God my Savior,
and my hope is in you all day long.

Psalm 25:5 New International Version

There is a popular series of children’s books called “Choose Your Own Adventure.” As the book is read, a decision point is reached, and the reader can decide between one of two options which will take them to a different page in the book. There are several combinations of possible plots, so the same book can be read a little differently each time.

Traveling by interstate can also sometimes be an adventure. There may be several signs, each taking you to a different place along the way. This sign looks interesting; You can go to a stadium, or on to “The Pier.” We weren’t sure which pier it was; it might be an amusement park, or could it be a commercial dock?

No matter which choice is made, there are little mileage signs along the way to tell the driver how far they’ve gone, and how much distance remains. If all else fails, there are paper road maps and GPS devices to help us.

If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.

Psalm 139:9-10 New International Version

The Christian life can, at times, be an adventure. God gives us free will to make the decisions that affect our lives. He gives us many resources to help us navigate life as we choose our adventure. The Bible is the ultimate guide book. It’s filled with advice, words of encouragement, and lessons that we can apply to our lives.

Moreover, God didn’t give us his Word and say, “You’ve got what you need. You’re on your own.” The Word – Christ Jesus – sent the Holy Spirit when he returned to his Father. The Holy Spirit is also called our Counselor, our Advocate and the Spirit of Truth. When we listen for his voice, he will guide us along the ultimate adventure – the path of righteousness, which leads to our salvation and eternal life in Heaven.

Now, that’s an adventure!
