“You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13 English Standard Version

“And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us.” Acts 17:26-27 English Standard Version

My favorite reading genre is mystery. Specifically, I love the Sherlock Holmes stories. I could read them over and over. Those stories make it hard for you to put the book down until you’ve finished them. If given the time, I could read any of those stories in one sitting. There is something very exciting about those stories, how one man seemingly has no problem solving crimes that the smartest, and most experienced, detectives could never solve without him.

There is another intrigue to the character of Sherlock Holmes, besides his incredible deductive reasoning skills and memory, and that is his absolute need for a case. Sherlock is obsessed with solving problems and becomes very bored, and even depressed, when there is no case to solve or the cases are too easy.

So what can we learn from Sherlock Holmes? The way he seeks out cases, and solving problems, with such zeal is the way that we should seek God and seek to do his will every single day. There will never be a time when there is nothing left to discover for us. For the ways of God are so beyond, and above, us that we will never discover all there is to know about God and his will.

Like Sherlock, if we spend some extended time apart from seeking a relationship with our Lord, we become dull and even depressed. God has given us an exciting world to explore. Let us orient our hearts every morning to seek God in everything we do in life, and we will never cease to be amazed.
