God Gets It

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. He counts the number of the stars; he calls them all by name. Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; his understanding is infinite. Psalm 147: 3-5 NKJV

News is often overwhelming: countries at war, nations divided, people in pain, children suffering, sanctity of life threatened, darkness prevailing. Perhaps even closer to home, we recognize our own lists of heartache, loss and confusion. I know these moments can lead to crippling fear and crushing doubt. But it’s in these moments that we are called to trust and lean on our faith, not our own understanding. When our finite minds fail to understand, the infinite mercy of God speaks to us through prayer, the Word and the sacraments.

We were created by and serve a God that cares more about us than we care about ourselves. He knows every last detail about us and nothing comes to pass that He does not already know. He knew the condition of humanity and the only saving solution. God sent His son – a part of himself – to live on earth and suffer death on our behalf. Not only did Jesus experience the heartaches, physical pains and temptations while he walked on this very earth, he also absorbed all of ours on the cross. We can’t even begin to fathom the depth of that pain. We serve a God who knows. He knows every tear we’ve wiped and every battle we’re facing. He knows the worries we hold and the deep brokenness of the world.

We worship and praise a God that not only hears our cries, but feels our pain. He isn’t distant. He doesn’t take breaks. He’s omnipotent and omnipresent. We will never have all the answers or reasons. We weren’t meant to (nor could we handle it, if we’re honest). Instead, we confidently place our life, our cares, our worries and our trust in the hands of the Almighty — who never leaves us. He will continue to guide and comfort us…all the way home.
