How Did We Get Here?

“And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.
Genesis 1:29 English Standard Version (ESV)

Last week, my husband and I decided to visit the Paint Mines in Calhan, Colorado. We charged the digital SLR camera, packed water and sunscreen, and headed out before dawn the next morning.

However, we didn’t print a map, and we didn’t take a photo of the map at the park entrance with our phones. It wasn’t long before we realized we’d taken a “wrong” turn, and we were heading farther away from the mines. Jon began to get frustrated at how far we’d walked when he had been looking forward to showing me the mines.

I was a bit distracted from his disparagement. Along the way, I saw flowers, cacti, and a bumblebee taking in its breakfast. We even saw a “jackalope” (yes, they exist!). We eventually found the mines; it just took a little longer to get there.

Sometimes we wander off the planned path in our life’s journey, but that doesn’t mean the trip is ruined. In the words of the late artist Bob Ross, we stumbled upon a “happy accident” and enjoyed the vastness of the eastern plains.

The next time you get off the planned path, look around. There may be a pleasant surprise in store!

“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!
Psalm 34:8a ESV

  1. Ha ha, my friend and I took just the same path yesterday. It was beautiful but we were wondering what all the hoopla was about. Sometimes the hoopla just takes longer. Just about a mile longer in this case.
