In The Midst of Eternity

“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
Psalm 90:12 New International Version

The sand dunes roll on in seemingly endless succession as far as the eye can see on this part of the Oregon Coast.  It reminds me of this hymn verse:

“Time, like an ever-rolling stream,
Soon bears us all away;
We fly forgotten as a dream
Dies at the op’ning day.”

If we are honest, you and I find ourselves as very minute blips on the great radar screen of eternity.  We come into this world with nothing and we exit this world with nothing.  Our sin and many shortcomings weigh heavily upon us in comparison with God’s holiness and timelessness.  What are we but dust that arises from the earth and returns to the earth?

And yet, the Lord of the universe has had mercy upon us.  He saw us in our lostness and hopelessness and sent His Son to save us.  The eternal God intervened when we were lost in our transgressions.  The Lord gave up His heavenly throne to die upon a cross for us.

With all that in mind, we pray, “Lord, teach us to number our days.  May we understand your timeless grace and mercy, O Lord!  If you have cared for insignificant me, Lord, give me wisdom and courage and gratefulness to serve You in these few years I have upon this earth! “

Please take a careful look at your life today.  What is your condition without God’s grace?  What has the Lord done for you in His mercy?  Please assess what your response should be to His amazing grace.

Lord, teach me to number my days….
