He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son” Colossians 1:13 English Standard Version

Chapel of St. Timothy and Titus.

I am always fascinated by the beauty of stained glass. The patterns, and pictures, are all so different, and unique, in every building that contains stained glass windows, or even stained glass art. As you can see in the picture taken, in the chapel at Concordia Seminary, it is even more spectacular when light is shining through the glass with darkness surrounding it. This is not a perfect comparison, but one that I think could be helpful in understanding what it means to belong to the kingdom of light.

Every one of us knows what it is like to be surrounded by darkness, and sometimes it can be pretty intimidating. Whether that darkness is physical, like when you are camping deep in the mountains and you learn that it can be even darker at night than you thought, or spiritual, some time in our life that seems unending and insurmountable, we know what it means to be in the dark. Just because we are surrounded by darkness does not mean there is no light. Christ is the light! For the purposes of this analogy, you are the unique stained glass window that Christ’s light is shining through in a dark world. People should take notice that there is something different about you. They should be curious to know what that is. While we are still among darkness, we no longer live in it. We belong to Christ’s kingdom, a kingdom of light. The darkness can be frightening, but always remember this:

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” John 1:5 English Standard Version

Look to the light of Christ. Dwell in it. Remember that you are a little light of Christ, and your light matters to this world. Amen.
