Rock Solid

Christ’s resurrection assures us of ours.

We don’t often notice the rocks beneath our feet. When we do it’s because they trip us up, or roll away, or are out of place and we feel the need to kick them back where they belong.

On the day I took this photo, the rocks stood out from the snow on my path. I took particular notice of them because of the contrast they created and the way the snow lay across them after a strong wind. The snow was temporary, moving wherever it blew and eventually destined to melt away, while the rocks remained in their place. This image is a simplistic example of us and our time here on Earth.

We are like that snow, blown about until we find the Rock, Jesus Christ, who holds us in place and protects us. Still, even while clinging to the Rock, we know our time here is temporary. Many are uncomfortable with that thought. We grieve the loss of those who have gone before us even when we are assured we will one day see them again. We are unsure what that looks like, and question whether they are watching and interacting with us now or if we must wait until we join them in Heaven. We wonder what will change about our relationships when we are reunited and how we ourselves will be changed.

I certainly don’t have answers to those questions. What I do know is that the promise of our resurrection is real and that what Jesus did through His death gives us the opportunity to rise from the dead as He did and be holy as He is. That will be far better than we could ever imagine.

“I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed—  in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.”
