“Come and see.”
John 1:46b English Standard Version (ESV)
The sign read, “Scenic Overlook,” beckoning us to see something. Our curiosity was piqued, but we missed the exit, so we drove on to the next exit. We turned around, then turned around again so we could discover what was deserving of a sign.
We were not disappointed, The view of the Flatiron Mountains, from end to end, on top of the mesa was spectacular!
There’s a tower viewer at the Overlook. It’s binoculars mounted on a post, offering a more detailed view of the scenery. We could marvel at the entirety of the mountain range from the vista, or look into the lens and see individual trees and smaller boulders.
Jesus sees each one of us, amidst the world’s population of nearly eight billion people. He knows every one of us by name, and loves us as if we were the only person who mattered to him.
“Jesus answered (Nathanael)…, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,“
John 1:50b ESV
I wonder what Nathanael was thinking about, as he sat in the shade?
Jesus – the Word with God, who is God (John 1:1) – saw Nathanael under that fig tree at the beginning of time, before the world was ever created. As time marched on to that fateful meeting, Jesus never lost sight of him. Even when Nathanael questioned how the Messiah could possibly come from Nazareth, Jesus declared him righteous.
And, with a cry of joy at the sight of his Savior, Nathanael is a new creation in Christ.
“For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.”
1 Corinthians 13:12 ESV
Jesus has seen you throughout time, just as he saw Nathanael. He saw you sitting with your digital device, reading the Word of God, reading this devotion. He’s seen you as your faith has ebbed and flowed and grown. He sees you now, and he will be with you to the end of time. Rejoice! Every day, you are brand new in Christ!
