I love honey. I usually prefer to just eat it straight without mixing it into anything else. I totally understand how Winnie the Pooh could carry around a jar and lick it off of his paws all day. I’d be happy to do that, if it were socially acceptable. There are so many wonderfully tangible things about honey. There’s the sweetness, and the way it sticks to my lips so that the flavor remains longer. The beautiful color lets me imagine I’m sampling a ray of sunshine. The slowness of its movement keeps me from rushing, and I take the time to savor the fullness of it. It also provides a quick energy boost when I need it, which is why I sometimes carry packs of it in my pockets on long hikes.

“How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!”
Psalm 119:103 New International Version

Do we feel this same way about God’s Word? Do we carry it around all day in our hearts and ponder it? Do we let it linger on our lips and tongues? Is it at the ready in case we need a quick boost to get us through our day? Is it something we would gladly share with others as a delectable treat? These questions become more difficult to answer when we realize that throughout his 119th Psalm David is focusing on God’s law. These are the words he has found so sweet to his taste.

Somehow, speaking about God’s law tends to make people uncomfortable. We seem to fear that God’s rules for healthy living might infringe on our right to do whatever we want. Actually, it does! However, this is for our safety and the safety of others. God’s law was not written as a way to restrain us from enjoying life. On the contrary, He gave His law so that we could enjoy life more abundantly. His law preserves us, keeps us from danger, saves us, lights our way, gives us hope, and provides everything we need. Savor God’s Word, His law as well as His gospel. You will find its sweetness lingers!
