“Jesus said…’I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'”
John 8:12 New International Version

Tonight is Halloween, a night when children dress up in costumes and ask for candy treats from house to house.  Most of the customs of Halloween in America are pretty benign, but underneath the good fun often lies a darker and more sinister truth… evil is real.

There is a spiritual reality of the evil one, Satan.  And though we may make light of witches and demons and hellfire, the devil is real and there is definitely a darkness that many fall into.  Satanic forces are nothing to be trifled with and witchcraft is dangerous and dark and a huge trap.

But, and this is a huge but, Jesus Christ is the Light of the world.  He is is the Light no darkness can overcome.  He is the Light that dispels the darkness of sin and lights our path when the world around us is so confused.  He exposes sin and evil for what it is, rebellion against God.  He shines into our lives and takes away the darkness of sin and fills us with the glory of God in Jesus Christ.  He is the Light that makes the demons flee and brings rejoicing and truth into a dark world.

I hope that if you are out trick or treating tonight, you stay safe and have a good time.  But I also hope that on this dark night you remember the Light of the world, our Lord Jesus Christ, who suffered the darkness of our sin on the cross that we might be children of the Light forever.

“Though hordes of devils fill the land  All threatening to devour us,
We tremble not, unmoved we stand; They cannot overpow’r us.
Let this world’s tyrant rage; In battle we’ll engage
His might is doomed to fail; God’s judgment must prevail!
One little word subdues him.”
