A Voice Behind

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”
Isaiah 30: 21 (NIV)

The “voice behind” that Isaiah refers to is the voice of our Father. He is constantly guiding us back toward the path of righteousness. Even in those times when we are disobedient and wander down our own wayward roads, God pursues us. He is continually leading us back on course, calling out to us in his endless and boundless grace.

No matter if we turn to the left or right, no matter our circumstances or surroundings, no matter what choices we have made, no matter the direction we travel, nor the place of our dwelling, God is watching over us. His Spirit is calling us toward the path of righteousness, only found through the salvation of Jesus.

When you are close to a situation, it can be hard to see the bigger picture. Someone that is speaking from “behind” has a much clearer view than those directly involved. A scout or a lookout, a Shepherd watching their sheep, an observer. They have a perspective often worth trusting.

How much more can we trust our loving Father and Savior to speak words of direction and guidance and truth from his omniscient vantage point.

God wants what is absolutely best for us. He wants us to walk in truth and love. He wants a life in communion and relationship with God. The way in which God intends us to walk is the path leading directly to eternal life.

God offers this promise: that there will be a voice, no matter where we turn. No matter what direction we face. No matter what choices we’ve made. And that voice, the voice of God, will be speaking the truth. Our Shepherd’s voice will guide us and lead us in the way of eternal life with him. The Way is found in Jesus Christ our Savior and his death and resurrection.

God is the voice of our guiding Shepherd. God is The Way. God is the path of righteousness.

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
John 14:6 (NIV)
